So if you had the idea of capping your FPS at your monitors refresh rate, just don't do it.
This makes the smoothness of my game considerably worse and that can't be a placebo. But, when using this value my FPS dips even lower to sub 100 FPS. Valve can you please take a look at this?ĮDIT: If I use fps_max 145, you would think my system would never go below 144 (even when it's an average of the time it takes to render a frame over a given period, like More_SC2 is suggesting). Untill there is a fix you should use fps_max 999 to keep your FPS from dropping too low. The lower the fps_max value, the lower the lowest FPS will be. TLDR fps_max has an influence on the lowest FPS.

It seems like this command is making your system lazy and not run at its full potential. if you were to take an average of all the lowest FPS you were getting both using fps_max 300 and fps_max 999 you'll and up with a lower average when using fps_max 300. SO: it seems that the command fps_max is not working properly.
This means that fps_max values make your system "lazy" because the lower the value the lower your minimum FPS and thus more severe FPS drops. This surprised me because my FPS was regurarly dropping to values of 150, even on dust II. It even reached values above 450, sometimes reaching +500 and it n e v e r went lower then 250, lets say never lower than 200. I noticed the following: My FPS went drasticaly up. On a certain day I wanted to know how many FPS my system could produce. This creates an unsmooth experience, certainly on a 144hz screen. It varies quite a lot and even dips down to values of 150. When I monitor my FPS with net_graph 1 I notice that it is never stable at 300 fps. This is the problem I am experiencing: my FPS is capped at 300 using fps_max 300. I play on 1920:1440 streched (4:3 costum resolution), but I had FPS drops on more standard resolutions as well. If it's 250 or less it's probably not be the issue, if it's 500-1000 this may be the problem. The highest number on the list is your polling/report rate.
